Having your Paleo Cakes and Eating Them?
Recent reviews of blogs posted by many paleo followers have highlighted a worrying trend advocating recipes for sugar loaded paleo cakes, buns and paleo desserts. We decided to ask a few questions in an effort to find why one such blog chooses to promote these damaging foods under the Paleo banner.
“I have noticed a trend with our blog postings, and it seems the most popular ones, the ones that get the most likes, the ones you all tend to get the most excited about, are the paleo desserts. While I like some paleo-friendly desserts just as much as the next person, I’ve found that they have been slipping into our lives more and more, and that I’m back in the habit of craving something sweet after my meals. And that’s just a not-so-good place to be, when sugar is running the show.”
Great comment….the key is to move away from “pudding thinking” and to play with and embrace paleo whole heartedly using real food. Keep it simple (and filling) and know that comfort doesn’t need to come from a dish of dessert..
“For sure Katie! You know, we’re on day 19 of our “25 Days of Clean Eating” that we started with our gym members. So, saying goodbye to that dark chocolate for a spell has been hard, but it’s also gotten us back to a place of just really enjoying real foods, and retraining our brains about that sweet craving. I know there are a LOT of people out there who think that by just swapping out desserts (the flour, pure sugar kind) for some paleo-ified ones is the only way they can possibly live a paleo lifestyle…and while I think there is a time and place for some sweet treats, making those a part of your every day lives might be working against your overall health and wellness goals. Just our two cents”!
We love this exchange with folk from the paleo community because it highlights our concerns in the last few weeks, especially in the run up to Christmas. It revolves around the predilection for puddings now filed under the heading “paleo” which comfort people into thinking that they can still “have their cake and eat it” Don’t go there folks! If its got sugar in it, it’s not Paleo, Primal, Caveman, Stone Age or any other evolutionary model diet.
Filter your paleo preferences. If you find yourself still craving paleo cake or some sweet paleo dessert after a meal look at your food, look at what you are consuming and identify that which is causing you to crave. In particular assess your fat consumption and determine whether you ate enough good fat with your meal? Still craving your pud? Then delve a little deeper. What is the sweetness you are reaching for? Don’t compromise your self by filling the hole with pudding. The key is to rise above the habitual thinking and patterns you have around food. The folks who continually offer you buns and cake under the heading of “paleo”, we say, have missed the point. When you continually choose pudding (or cake, or bun or pie) after your meal you sell yourself short. Challenge those folks who push puddings on their sites because they are not doing you any favours. To clean up your diet and address that addiction to sugar, you have to lift your thinking, step up and move out of that place that got you trapped in the first place…..and you know what? The beautiful thing about paleo is that you can do it! In fact, the paleo food you eat will makes it easy for you. The food will take you to that place where balance happens but only if you give it a chance. And that means letting go of the thought you need a pudding after your meal; letting go of the thought that there is no way we can live a paleo lifestyle without pudding (how daft does it sound when you read it out loud)? and letting go of conventional wisdom.
Your old habits have brought you this far, for sure but how are they really working for you?
Go on. Try something new. Give it a go. We challenge you to challenge your old way of thinking, your old behaviours that have brought you to this point. Want more from life? Don’t compromise! Don’t waste your time caught up in the “gingerbread” house of temptation with paleo cakes (gluten free of course)!
Life is for living, just do it!

I control Type 2 diabetes with low carb and I find many of the Paleo recipes to be a good addition to my diet needs. I struggle with diet friendly desserts because it doesn’t take very many desserts for the cravings to return. – HAWKTHREE
Thanks for sharing this. I’ve been seeing the same of late, and was kind of scratching my head about it. You’re right, if it’s got sugar in it, it ain’t paleo. Besides, I don’t think our paleo counterparts were sitting around baking cupcakes…Let’s keep it simple, right. Eat real, eat clean. – Manj Carthigaser
