Paleo Breakfast: Fast
It’s a quiet day for a Bank Holiday Monday no rushing about, no work, no hassles. We take a while to come round and then stir ourselves enough to contemplate breakfast. Having eaten late last night, I am not hungry but the kids want to eat and I find bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and liver and throw all except the eggs into a large frying pan with some coconut oil. It takes no more than five minutes to prepare a lovely pan full of food including frying eggs at the last minute. Plates are laid with knives and forks and we eat together before Rob heads out to Sam’s house for a swim party at Ilkley Lido. P has no plans and says it’s a chill day. B wants to go to the skate park and that’s the last we have seen of him today!
I have chicken cooking for tea. I coated the skin with ghee and it is beginning to look golden brown in the oven. I am going to serve this with some sweet potatoes baked in their skins and with some fresh churned butter, coloured with parsley from the window sill. To offset the soft orangey glow, I am going to add in something green, spinach probably or some savoy cabbage, I can’t remember whats left but it doesn’t seem to matter with this type of cooking!
We have eaten well this long weekend. There is a part of this paleo life I have touched on above and that is intermittent fasting. Our ancestors were routinely subjected to periods of starvation and when you follow a paleo diet it can be helpful to skip a meal at least once a week. Check out the work of Art de Vany and the New Evolution Diet. He says when blood glucose levels are low our DNA gets the signal that resources are scarce and that now is a bad time to reproduce. Instead, the DNA goes into self repair mode, concentrating on fortifying itself, making us stronger. So fasting is not for purpose of calorie restriction (you can make up the calories the next day if you want to). These mini-fasts are a way to trigger the body’s self repair mode which promotes metabollic efficiency, longevity and resistance to disease.
